Are you looking for a romantic getaway for two? Or maybe you’re looking for the backdrop for a Brown County history lesson for the kids. In either case, The Book is the perfect place for you.

The Book is one of few Brown County log cabins that has remained on its original site for over 120 years, and is available to overnight guests. Reportedly used as a writing retreat by Hoosier author Booth Tarkington, The Book retains all its original charm, although it has been updated for comfort and safety.

Brown County screen porch A large screened porch spans the length of the cabin and provides a view of the wooded hillside . Step from the porch into the living room with its wood-burning fireplace and stone hearth. The antique table, made in Brown County, seats four beneath a lovely old chandelier.

Ladder-like stairs originally provided access to the roomy loft bedroom. When guests to The Book reported the ascent was too steep, easy-to-climb stairs were added. The kitchen and bathroom add to the rustic charm The Book is known for.

Log Cabin fireplace An old Brown County native tells us that “we’re building now in places that were never meant to be built on.” When you make it up the long, narrow, steep driveway to The Book, you’ll see that building in hard-to-access spots is a Brown County tradition. Around 1880 when The Book was built, the horses that were driven up the hill at The Book didn’t complain! You can make it, too. However, we recommend that you drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle in inclement weather.
